Miss Representation

Miss Representation is a documentary by American actress Jennifer Siebel Newsom about how women are objectified in this world and in particular the US. It's very upsetting to hear the facts about how little involvement women have in the media, and how they are spoken about openly on air by men. This documentary is the exact reason why I write and really highlights what is wrong and what needs to be done to resolve it. People say women are 'equal' to men, but the harsh reality is that sexual discrimination is still extremely prominent in today's society.

Trailer for Miss Representation:

Are current advertising campaigns such as this:

Really that different to the openly sexist campaigns from a few decades ago like this?

Dolce and Gabbana do not literally spell it out, however a half-dressed Madonna (who is seen as a strong, powerful women in todays society) is still scrubbing the floors. Women are bombarded with pictures and underlying messages like this everyday and we are also the only ones who hold the power to truly change what is put out by the media. Dismiss products that degrade women in sexual advertising campaigns and purchase magazines and films that celebrate women's accomplishments. That way young girls and women will realise that it is not normal for them to be objectified in such a way and have the confidence to know that they are much more than a cleaner or a cook.

  1. Unfortunately, men are still the ones holding key positions in media governing bodies and most organisations in the media. Which is exactly why we need clued up young women like yourself to promote women's abilities and achievements!
